Intermediate chronotype in one paragraph
A total between 43 and 53 means your answers did not commit. You are not fighting your alarm and you are not up before it; you can think at 09:00 and you can think at 22:00; a 07:00 start is survivable and a midnight finish is survivable and neither one is home. In most populations this is the largest group, and it is the band most likely to be handed a paragraph of filler because there is no dramatic story in it. There is a real story, and it has two halves that pull in opposite directions: your flexibility is a genuine, undervalued asset, and the absence of a strong signal is a genuine, under-discussed problem. Owls and larks are issued a decision rule by their own biology. You have to build yours.
How this result was measured
Sixteen items produced your score: six multiple-choice questions — free-day sleep time, free-day wake time, alertness in the first half hour, when your thinking is sharpest, when you would choose to do two hours of physical work, and how hard it is to get up — and ten agreement statements rated 1–5, of which five are reverse-keyed so that the late-night statements pull the total down. Everything sums to one number from 16 to 80, higher meaning more morning-leaning, and 43–53 is the middle of that range. These band edges are cut points published with the instrument, not percentiles: no norm sample stands behind them, so 48 means 48 out of 80 on this scale and nothing about your rank among other people. The item set is an original RECATOOLS composition — morningness–eveningness has been studied for decades, but these sixteen items have no validation studies of their own. And the limit that matters most on a mid-scale result: a preference questionnaire is not a measurement of your circadian phase. That measurement is dim-light melatonin onset (DLMO) — timed saliva sampling under dim light, in a lab or a supervised home protocol. It is the only thing that reads the clock itself.
Read your item pattern, not just your total
This matters more in your band than in any other, because a mid-scale total on a single dimension can be produced two completely different ways. One is a genuinely flat preference: you answered near the middle on most items because most items genuinely felt middling. The other is a split profile: strong early answers on some items and strong late answers on others — the person who wakes at 06:30 without an alarm and also does their best creative work after 22:00, whose extremes cancel out into a 48. Those two people have very little in common and the total cannot tell them apart. So go back over your answers. If you disagreed strongly with "mornings are something to get through" and agreed strongly with "my best creative work happens after 22:00", your result is an average of two real signals rather than the absence of one, and the practical advice you need is closer to "protect both peaks and defend the middle of the day" than to anything on this page about flexibility.
Your mid-sleep point, and why it beats the label
Alongside the band this test reports your mid-sleep point — the clock time halfway between falling asleep and waking on a free day. A single number beats a label because it can be compared and tracked: "intermediate" is a bucket that contains a great many different lives, whereas 03:45 is a position on the clock you can set against your partner's, your team's, or your own from five years ago. Intermediate types usually land around 03:30–04:30, and population data puts the average adult's free-day mid-sleep near 04:00, so you sit close to the centre of the distribution. Ours is estimated from the midpoints of the windows you chose, not from a diary, so allow half an hour of slack; and it is uncorrected for accumulated workweek sleep debt, which the research version adjusts for. For you there is an extra caution: mid-scale scores are the least stable ones on any single-dimension instrument. A fortnight of bad sleep, a deadline or a holiday can move you a band in either direction, and that movement is usually noise rather than a change in your clock.
What it looks like day to day
Mostly, nothing dramatic. You wake without much drama and without much enthusiasm, you are usable within half an hour, and your alertness through the day is a gentle curve rather than a peak — a mild early-afternoon dip, a reasonable evening, no cliff and no second wind worth naming. The upside shows up in situations that break other people: a 06:00 flight, a rotating roster, a week of calls with another continent, a partner on a different clock, a newborn. You adapt to time-zone shifts and schedule changes with less pain than most, and if you work anywhere with shifts, that tolerance is worth naming out loud at review time. The downside is the same trait seen from the other side. Because nothing hurts sharply, nothing warns you. An owl forced into 07:00 starts knows they are suffering; you will quietly take the 07:00 start and the 01:00 deadline in the same week, and the bill arrives as chronic short sleep rather than as mismatch pain. That is the characteristic failure mode of this band: no alarm bell, so the debt accumulates unlabelled and gets blamed on age, work or personality.
The mismatch problem, inverted
You are the person the standard timetable does not injure, which sounds like the end of the discussion and isn't. Your schedule ends up being set by everyone else's needs, because you are the one who can do the early shift, take the late call, cover the handover, drive to the airport. Each request is reasonable; the accumulation is not, and there is no biological signal telling you where to stop. So the boundary has to be drawn from principle rather than from pain: total hours slept, and how regular your timing is. The second inversion is that mainstream chronotype advice does not fit you. Almost all of it is written for the mismatched — how to advance a delayed clock, how to survive an early start, how to use morning light to fight your own biology. You do not have that fight. Your performance variance is driven far more by how much you slept, whether you exercised, what the week's stress looked like and how the meetings were arranged than by circadian phase, and reading a lot of chronotype content will tempt you to explain a sleep-quantity problem with a timing story.
What shifts, and what doesn't
Age moves everyone in the same direction: chronotype is at its latest around the end of adolescence and advances steadily earlier from there, so an intermediate score at 22 and an intermediate score at 55 sit on different parts of the same trajectory — and if you have been intermediate for two decades, you have probably been quietly drifting earlier within the band. Light works on you exactly as it works on everyone: morning light advances the clock, evening light delays it. The difference is that you have more room to use it deliberately rather than defensively. If a new job needs you to start at 07:00, a consistent early wake time plus outdoor light in the first hour will genuinely settle you into it within a couple of weeks, and that is a claim we would not make for a definite evening type. What will not work is treating flexibility as unlimited: your clock still exists, it still prefers regularity, and it degrades the same way anyone's does when bedtime and wake time move by two hours every weekend.
What to do without a strong signal
- Run a two-week timing audit instead of trusting the label. Rate your alertness 1–5 at three fixed times a day — mid-morning, mid-afternoon, evening — and note your sleep. Fourteen days of your own data beats a band name, and you are the band that most needs the data.
- Anchor your wake time, not your bedtime. For you, regularity buys more than timing does. A wake time that holds within an hour across the whole week — weekends included — is the single highest-value habit available in this band.
- Choose your schedule for your life, not your biology. You are genuinely allowed to take the shift that suits your family, your commute or your gym. Very few people get to make that decision on non-medical grounds. Make it on purpose rather than by accumulation.
- Count hours, because nothing else will warn you. Track sleep duration for a month. Your band's risk is not mismatch, it is quiet debt, and duration is the only number that shows it.
The honest caveat
This page reads back a preference you reported. It is not a measurement of your circadian phase — that is what DLMO does, from timed saliva samples in dim light, and no questionnaire substitutes for it. The sixteen items are original and unvalidated, sitting on a well-researched construct, and a mid-scale score is the least stable region of any single-dimension scale. Above all, this is not a sleep-disorder screen. It cannot detect insomnia, sleep apnoea, delayed sleep-wake phase disorder or any other sleep disorder, because none of its questions look for them; "my chronotype is intermediate" says nothing whatsoever about whether your sleep is healthy. See a doctor for loud snoring or witnessed pauses in your breathing, for sleep that leaves you unrefreshed despite adequate hours, for daytime sleepiness that will not lift, or for an inability to sleep that is causing you distress.
