How to use

Set a range

Up to 366 days at a time. It starts at three months from today.

Pick the step

开市, 立券, 交易 and 纳财 are separate entries, so the day you sign and the day you open can be chosen apart.

Tick the zodiacs

The owner's, or every partner's. A day that clashes any of them is removed.

Open a day to see why

Each day shows its full 宜 and 忌 lists, its 建除 officer and its stem-branch. Fit-out, staffing and licences are yours to check.

Opening and signing are not the same day

Picking an opening day from the almanac is a custom among Chinese businesses. This page applies its rules as written and makes no claim that a date brings trade. The rules come from the 欽定協紀辨方書, the Qing court's date-selection manual, and the 宜 and 忌 table is the one the Daily Chinese Almanac reads.

Chapter 11 gives 開市 (opening for trade), 立劵交易 (signing and dealing) and 納財 (taking money in) separate headings with different rules. A day that suits 立券 need not suit 开市, so this page looks at one word at a time.

StepRemovedFlaggedGood officers
开市月破平, 收, 閉 days滿, 成, 開 days
立券, 交易 (held to 立劵交易)月破平, 收 days滿 days
纳财月破平 days滿, 收 days

月破 is also 大耗. Chapter 10 says both forbid these four activities and that the virtue spirits cannot lift it. From 1990 to 2060 the 宜 table never lists any of them on a 月破 day. Flagged means chapter 10 lifts it in named cases that we do not compute, so the day stays. A good officer is noted when you open the day.

黑道 days and clashes

Each day takes one of twelve spirits from its month and day branches, and six are 黃道. Chapter 11 does not use them, but a 黃道吉日 is a 黃道 day by name, so 黑道 days are hidden by default and the tick box shows them. The clash rule is in chapter 33: a birth-year branch must not be clashed by the branches of the chosen time. This page tests the day only, six branches apart. The passage does not say whose zodiac counts in a partnership, so tick as many as you want.

What this table can and cannot tell you

The table comes from the open-source lunar-javascript library. It has not been checked entry by entry against the manual's month grids, which the Wikisource text omits, or against any printed 通胜. The other spirits in each heading (小耗, 四耗, 九空 and the rest) are not calculated. For the hour of the day, see Chinese auspicious hours.

Disclaimer

This tool computes per public algorithms — not business advice. Final opening date depends on fit-out progress, staffing, market timing, regulatory compliance. Treat algorithm results as cultural reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The table this tool reads has only 开市; neither 开张 nor 开业 appears in it. Use the 开市 option.

  • The manual has no such event. If you want an analogy, 立券 is the nearest for an agreement and 开市 for opening to customers. Registration keeps its own timetable.

  • The passages used here do not say. Tick them all and see which days are left.

  • This tool makes no such claim. It shows how one almanac tradition's rules fall on a given day, nothing more.

  • No. Browser-local, no server calls.

Method & sources

How it computes

Each step is one word from the almanac table: 开市, 立券, 交易 or 纳财, in 宜 and not in 忌. Then 協紀辨方書 卷十一: 月破 removed; 平, 收, 閉 flagged for 開市, 平, 收 for 立券 and 交易, 平 for 纳财. 黑道 days hidden unless shown. Zodiacs ticked remove a day whose branch clashes theirs (地支六沖, 卷三十三). Dates, 建除 and 宜/忌 are the almanac kernels' (DateSelectionKernel).

What this tool implements

  • Rules taken from 協紀辨方書 卷十一 where a date alone can show them. Removed: 月破, 往亡, 歸忌 (卷十: not lifted by the virtue spirits) and a branch the heading names. Flagged, not removed: 建, 平, 收, 滿, 閉 (卷十 lifts them in named cases this tool does not compute). The other spirits in each heading are not computed.
  • 黑道 days are hidden by default and can be shown. 卷十一 does not use them; 神樞經 in 卷七 does, and the page says both.
  • Personal clash is 地支六沖 on the day only, the 本命 rule of 卷三十三. Nothing else about the person is used.
  • Each 宜 word is matched exactly, the list runs in date order with no score and no cap below the 366-day range limit, and the summary line counts what each rule took out.
  • 開市, 立劵交易 and 納財 have separate headings in 卷十一; 月破 is also 大耗 (卷十), which forbids all of them.

What can make this go out of date

  • No network calls and no stored data: everything runs in the browser, and the reader's dates and zodiacs are not written to the URL.
