How to use

Enter Gregorian birth date

Pick a Gregorian birth date; the tool converts to lunar + stem-branch internally. Supported range 1900-2100.

Pick birth hour (時辰)

Enter as HH:MM. Hour precision is enough (the classical system uses 2-hour blocks). Don't know your hour? Choose 12:00 — the hour pillar still feeds the 五行 tally and strength reading.

Pick gender

Gender produces subtle differences in 大运 (luck cycles) and 十神 labelling. This tool bases the favorable-element verdict on 五行 strength; gender is recorded for reference only.

Read the favorable element

You get the 4 pillars, day master, 五行 distribution, 月令 (month branch), and a strong/weak verdict. From that, the 旺衰平衡 method derives your 喜用神 (favorable) + 忌神 (unfavorable) elements plus their lucky color and favorable direction.

Bazi Favorable Element (喜用神): The Heart of Balanced Reading

In bazi (Four Pillars) analysis, the favorable element — 喜用神 (xǐ-yòng-shén) — is the single most important pivot of an entire chart reading. A bazi chart converts birth year, month, day, and hour into four stem-branch pairs (eight characters). The stem of the day pillar is the "day master" (日主), representing the person themselves. Classical theory holds that a life's fortune hinges largely on how strong or weak the day master is within the whole chart, and on which of the Five Elements can pull the chart back toward balance (中和). The elements that restore balance are the 喜用神 (favorable); those that worsen the imbalance are the 忌神 (unfavorable).

What "strong vs weak" (旺衰) means

Strength is judged on three classical signals — 得令 (in season), 得地 (rooted), 得勢 (numerous). 得令 — the day master being in its strong season at the month branch (月令) — is the most important of the three. This tool scores all three at once: the day master's own element (比劫, companions) and the element that generates it (印, resource) count as supporting force; the elements it produces (食傷, output), conquers (財, wealth), and that conquer it (官殺, officer) count as draining force. A high support share reads as "strong" (身强); a low share reads as "weak" (身弱); in between is "balanced" (中和). The month branch is weighted most heavily in the score, mirroring the classical view that being 得令 is the number-one strength signal.

How the favorable element is chosen

The selection logic is 扶抑 (support-or-suppress): a strong day master should be drained, controlled, and exhausted — its favorable elements are output (食傷), wealth (財), and officer (官殺), which trim an over-strong self. A weak day master should be generated and supported — its favorable elements are resource (印) and companion (比劫), which reinforce an under-strength self. The tool performs this automatically and maps each favorable element to its traditional lucky color and favorable direction: Wood → green / East, Fire → red / South, Earth → yellow / Centre, Metal → white / West, Water → black-blue / North. People use these as cultural cues for clothing, home arrangement, and travel direction.

"That which reduces the excess and replenishes the lacking is called the favorable element." — classical bazi selection principle

Disclaimer + school variation

Favorable-element selection has many competing schools. Besides the 旺衰平衡 (strength-balancing / 扶抑) method this tool implements, there are 調候 (climate-based, judging hot/cold/dry/damp), 通關 (mediation, resolving element conflicts), 病藥 (diagnosis-remedy), and 格局 (structural-pattern) systems — the same chart can yield different favorable elements across schools. This tool is for cultural entertainment and introductory reference only; it does not constitute professional advice and cannot replace a human practitioner's holistic judgement. ASEAN Chinese communities (especially Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia) retain strong interest in 喜用神, name choices, and color selection; treat this as a starting cross-reference, and ground any important decision in practical reality and professional consultation. All computation runs locally in your browser — no birth data is uploaded or stored.

10 Facts about the Favorable Element (喜用神)

01

"喜用神" is actually two ideas: 用神 (the single most pivotal balancing element) and 喜神 (the element that assists it). In everyday use they are spoken of together as the "favorable element(s)".

02

The first step is always judging the day master as strong or weak. Get that backwards and every favorable/unfavorable label flips — the most common beginner mistake.

03

Being 得令 (in season at the month branch) is the single biggest strength factor. The classics call 月令 the "headline" of the chart — it can decide strong vs weak on its own, which is why the month branch carries the most weight.

04

The same chart can yield different favorable elements across schools. A weak Fire born in winter: the strength school may add Wood+Fire to support; the climate school directly takes Fire to warm the chart — close, but emphasised differently.

05

Mapping the favorable element to "lucky colors" is a popular folk-remedy practice: Water-favored people wear black/blue, Fire-favored wear red/purple. It is a cultural-psychological practice with no scientific causation.

06

Many Chinese families deliberately add radicals tied to the favorable element when naming a child — e.g. a 氵 (water) radical for a water-favored chart. Naming is one of the most practical uses of 喜用神.

07

The 忌神 (unfavorable element) is not an evil omen — just the element you should not over-strengthen right now. Balance is the goal: if an "unfavorable" element is itself far too weak, moderate replenishment can still be needed.

08

Professional readings adjust the favorable element dynamically with 大运 (luck cycles) and 流年 (annual luck) — a cycle that supplies a missing element can shift that period's favorables. This tool computes only the natal baseline.

09

Truly 中和 (balanced) charts are relatively rare; their favorable element acts gently. For these, the tool suggests the scarcest element(s) as the area to replenish rather than forcing a strong/weak verdict.

10

The favorable element is part of Chinese cultural heritage — still widely discussed in HK, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia (naming, color choice, feng-shui layout) — but its predictive power is not statistically validated, so treat it as cultural reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The favorable element is whichever of the Five Elements best pulls the chart toward balance. You first judge the day master's strength: a strong day master favors draining/controlling/exhausting elements (output, wealth, officer); a weak one favors generating/supporting elements (resource, companion). Those balancing elements are the 喜用神; the opposite are 忌神.

  • It uses the most common 旺衰平衡 (strength-balancing / 扶抑) method: score the day master on 得令/得地/得勢 to decide strong vs weak, then select the favorable element by the 扶抑 principle. Other schools (climate, mediation, diagnosis-remedy, structural pattern) may reach different conclusions. Treat this as introductory + cultural reference only.

  • Pick 12:00 for an approximation. Year/month/day pillars stay accurate, but the hour pillar feeds the 五行 tally and strength judgement, so the favorable element can shift with the hour. If accuracy matters, check hospital or parental records.

  • The tool tallies the eight characters into supporting elements (companions same as the day master + resource that generates it) versus draining elements (output, wealth, officer), with the month branch (月令) weighted more heavily. A high support share reads as strong, a low share as weak, in between as balanced.

  • They come from the traditional Five-Element correspondence table (Wood: East/green, Fire: South/red, Earth: Centre/yellow, Metal: West/white, Water: North/black-blue). This is a cultural-psychological practice with no proven scientific causation. Use it as a cultural cue for clothing or layout, not a basis for decisions.

  • No — the 忌神 is not an evil force, just the element you should not over-strengthen right now. Balance is the goal: if an "unfavorable" element is itself extremely weak, avoiding it entirely could create a new imbalance. It is simply the direction "not to reinforce" given the current strength picture.

  • No. All computation is browser-local with no server calls. Even for sensitive metaphysical inputs, RECATOOLS enforces zero-tracking + zero-storage.

  • Not as your only guide. The favorable element is a tool for cultural reflection and comfort, not for decisions. Major choices (marriage, career, health, relocation) should rest on practical analysis, professional advice, and personal values. If it brings you cultural connection, that's its value; if it makes you fearful or passive, ignore it.

  • Two main reasons: (1) different schools — strength-balancing, climate, mediation, etc. select differently; (2) different charting boundaries — year-switch at 立春 and early-vs-late 子时 day boundaries change the pillars, which changes strength and the favorable element. This tool uses the common early-zi + 立春-year-switch settings.

  • No. The tool implements only one school's basic strength + 扶抑 selection; it cannot handle structural patterns, climate balancing, stem-branch combinations/clashes, or luck-cycle interactions. Use it for introductory understanding and cross-checking; for a formal consultation, see a professional practitioner.
