Converting Oven Recipes for the Air Fryer

An air fryer is not a deep fryer at all — it is a compact, high-powered convection oven, a small chamber with a fan that whips hot air around the food at speed. That single fact explains everything about converting a recipe to it. Because the moving air transfers heat to the surface of the food far more efficiently than the still air of a conventional oven, the same temperature setting cooks faster and browns harder. Left unchanged, an oven recipe run in an air fryer tends to scorch the outside while the centre lags behind. The fix is the simple rule this calculator applies: lower the temperature by about twenty degrees Celsius, or twenty-five Fahrenheit, and trim the time by roughly a fifth.

Those two adjustments bring the air fryer back in line with what the recipe intended, but the calculator deliberately adds a third piece of guidance — a check-early reminder at about three-quarters of the converted time. Air fryers vary enormously: a powerful model with a small basket cooks much faster than a large, gently-heated one, and a crowded basket behaves differently from a sparse one. The converted time is a confident starting point, not a guarantee, so opening the drawer to check, shake or turn the food partway through is how you land it perfectly and get the even browning the appliance is famous for. For anything crowded, cooking in a single layer or in batches keeps the all-important airflow moving.

The conversion is most dependable for the foods air fryers excel at — vegetables, chips, chicken pieces, frozen snacks and small bakes — and least dependable for very wet batters or large, delicate cakes, where the strong draft can misbehave. And for any meat, the timer is only ever a guide: the real test of doneness and safety is the internal temperature, read with a thermometer. Treat the calculator’s output as an experienced first guess that saves you from ruining a dish on the first try, then note how your particular machine compares so your next conversion is even closer. Everything is computed in your browser from the standard rule of thumb, so nothing you enter leaves your device.

An air fryer is a small fan oven on overdrive — drop the heat, trim the time, and trust the thermometer over the timer.

10 Facts About Air-Fryer Cooking

01

Drop the oven temperature by about 20°C (25°F) for an air fryer.

02

Cut the cooking time by roughly 20%.

03

Air fryers are just compact fan (convection) ovens.

04

Rapid air circulation cooks the outside faster.

05

Smaller baskets mean food cooks more quickly.

06

Shaking or turning food gives even browning.

07

Don’t overcrowd — air needs to flow around food.

08

Always check meat with a thermometer, not the clock.

09

Preheating an air fryer takes only 2–3 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The standard rule is to lower the temperature by about 20°C (25°F) and reduce the cooking time by roughly 20%. Because air fryers circulate hot air rapidly in a small space, they cook faster and brown more aggressively than a conventional oven, so a little less heat and time gets you to the same result.
  • An air fryer is essentially a small, powerful fan oven. The intense air circulation transfers heat to the food’s surface much faster, so the same dial setting would brown or even burn the outside before the inside is done. Dropping the temperature by around 20°C compensates and gives even cooking.
  • Air fryers are fast and vary a lot between models and by how full the basket is, so food can be ready sooner than the converted time suggests. Checking at about three-quarters of the time — and shaking or turning then — lets you catch it at the right point and ensures even browning.
  • It is a reliable starting point for most roasted and baked foods — vegetables, chips, chicken pieces, frozen snacks and small bakes. It works less well for very wet batters, large cakes or anything that needs to rise gently or hold liquid, where the strong airflow can be a problem. Treat the result as a first attempt and adjust.
  • Both. Pick your unit and enter the oven temperature; the tool shows the air-fryer setting in your chosen unit and the other for reference. The underlying rule is the same — about a 20°C, or 25°F, reduction.
  • Many air fryers benefit from a brief two-to-three-minute preheat, especially for crispy results, but it is much quicker than an oven. Some models and recipes skip it entirely. If your recipe assumed a preheated oven, a short air-fryer preheat keeps the timing comparable.
  • A smaller or fuller basket changes how air moves around the food. Overcrowding blocks the airflow that makes an air fryer work, leading to uneven, soggy results, so cook in a single layer where possible and in batches if needed. A less full basket generally cooks faster.
  • Always judge meat by internal temperature with a thermometer, not by the timer. The converted time gets you close, but the only reliable test of doneness and food safety is the core temperature reaching the recommended level for that meat.
  • No — it is a practical rule of thumb. Air fryers differ widely in wattage and design, so use the result as a confident first guess, check early, and note what works for your machine. After a few dishes you will know how your model compares to the calculator.
