CapCut is probably the most widely used AI-assisted creative tool in Southeast Asia, and most of its users would not describe it that way — the captioning, background removal and text-to-video sit inside an editor people opened to trim a clip. The app has a key split: it is marketed as CapCut internationally and as Jianying in mainland China. While from the same lineage, they are not identical products, and their features, terms, and pricing—the core of Jianying is free—diverge. For creators and small merchants across the region it is the default, which makes its pricing and export terms worth reading rather than assuming.
CapCut is one of the most capable free video editors available, with AI shortcuts that save real time on short-form work. Its pricing is opaque — no public list, region-dependent prices, and a mobile-only Standard plan — and its licence over uploaded content is broad even though it disclaims ownership. It offers a multi-track timeline, templates, effects and transitions, alongside AI tools for automatic captions, text-to-speech, background removal, script-to-video, AI avatars, voice cloning and trimming talking-head footage; Jianying's desktop version also advertises multi-camera editing and support for NVIDIA's RTX 50-series graphics cards. Outside China the service is contracted through Bytedance Pte. Ltd. in Singapore under Singapore law, while US users have separate terms, and Jianying is run by Shenzhen Lianmeng Technology. CapCut launched internationally in 2020 after Jianying's debut in China.
CapCut does not publish a price list. Its help pages say prices vary by region, device and promotion and appear in the app after signing in. Since spring 2026 there are two paid plans: Standard, designed for mobile, and Pro, needed for paid features on a computer, which rose to 1,200 AI credits a month and 1TB of cloud storage. A CapCut guide puts Pro at about $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year, and in China Jianying sells VIP and SVIP memberships, with SVIP reported at ¥499 a year. The free editor still covers the core timeline tools.
CapCut's terms, updated in April 2026, say it does not own users' content but takes a broad, perpetual, transferable licence to use it to run and develop its services, subject to platform settings. In the US the app was pulled on 18 January 2025 under the law aimed at TikTok and restored to app stores in February; in January 2026 ByteDance closed a joint venture with Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX that covers CapCut along with TikTok.
