How to use the Tile Calculator

Measure the area to be tiled

For floors: measure length and width tip-to-tip along the room's longest dimensions. For walls (bathroom backsplash, shower surrounds): measure each wall separately and add the areas. For L-shaped rooms, split into rectangles and run the calculator for each. Always measure twice — a 1-inch error on a 12-ft wall is one tile's worth of difference and can mean an extra box at checkout.

Get exact tile dimensions from the spec sheet

Tile sizes on the product page are nominal (e.g. "12-inch tile"). Actual cut dimensions can be 0.5–1.0 inch smaller than nominal (an 11.5-inch actual). Always check the manufacturer's spec sheet for the actual face dimension and enter THAT — using the nominal size will under-order by 4–8% on a typical room.

Pick the right pattern + waste buffer

The pattern dropdown auto-suggests appropriate waste percentages: 10% for straight grid (standard), 15% for diagonal 45° (more edge cuts), 20% for herringbone / chevron / mosaic (every cut creates angled offcuts). For complex multi-tile patterns or anywhere you need to maintain visual rhythm, bump waste another 5% — running short means returning to find the same dye lot is sold out.

Every tile box has a dye-lot or batch number on the label. Tiles from different lots can vary visibly in color — natural stone (marble, travertine, slate) is the worst offender, but porcelain and ceramic also drift across runs. Always order all tiles for one project in one purchase, and confirm at checkout that all boxes share the same lot number. The 10% waste buffer is your insurance against finding out you need more from a now-unavailable lot.

Tile math — waste, dye lots, and the cost of running short

Tile is the most unforgiving home-improvement material when it comes to ordering quantities. Paint can be re-tinted; concrete can be supplemented from a second truck; lumber can be cut from scrap. Tile is the opposite — once you've committed to a specific style, color, and dye lot, finding "one more box" weeks later is often impossible. Manufacturers cycle SKUs, retailers cycle inventory, and the original lot you bought from is unlikely to still be available. This is why every experienced tiler over-orders by 10–20% from the start. The cost of returning unused tile (or just storing it as future repair stock) is trivial compared to the cost of finishing a bathroom 80% tiled and unable to source the last 8 tiles.

Why pattern dictates waste buffer

The waste buffer recommendation varies by pattern because cutting geometry creates different amounts of unusable offcut. Straight grid (tiles aligned in a regular grid) has the lowest waste at ~10% — straight cuts along the room perimeter produce strip offcuts that can often be reused at the opposite wall or in cutouts (around toilet flanges, vanity bases, doorways). Diagonal pattern (tiles rotated 45°) requires every perimeter tile to be triangle-cut at 45°, and the resulting triangular offcuts can almost never be reused at acute angles elsewhere — bump to 15%. Herringbone, chevron, basketweave, and mosaic patterns require interlocking cuts at the perimeter where pattern direction changes; offcuts have alien geometries that don't match any other position — 20% minimum waste, sometimes 25% for complex tile mixes.

Tile dye lots are like wine vintages — same vineyard, different year, slightly different result. Once a lot is sold out, you cannot get it back. Buy ALL your tile in one purchase from one lot, or accept visible banding.

Grout math — the often-forgotten line item

Grout volume scales with tile perimeter, not area — smaller tiles have a much higher perimeter-to-area ratio and need proportionally more grout. A 12×12-inch tile field needs about 1 kg of dry grout powder per square meter; a 6×6-inch field needs about 1.8 kg/m²; a 2×2-inch mosaic needs 5+ kg/m². Grout gap width matters too: a 3 mm joint uses about half the grout of a 6 mm joint. For pre-mixed grout (sold in tubs), check the coverage table on the label — most manufacturers (Mapei, Custom Building Products, Laticrete, ARDEX, Davco) publish detailed coverage tables per tile size and joint width. The estimate in this tool assumes 8 mm tile thickness and standard joint widths; for thicker tiles (12 mm+) or larger joints, bump grout quantity by 25–40%.

The ASEAN tile-supply angle

Tile supply across ASEAN follows different conventions than US markets. Singapore / Malaysia: dominant tile suppliers are Soon Bee Huat, Hafary, White Horse (Malaysia-based), Niro Ceramics. Imported European porcelain (Marazzi, Florim, Iris) is widely available but premium-priced. Standard ceramic floor tiles come in 30×30, 60×60, 80×80 cm metric sizes. Indonesia: huge domestic tile industry (Roman, Mulia, Asia Tile, Granito) producing competitive porcelain at low prices — Java's tile manufacturing belt rivals Italy for output volume. Thailand / Vietnam: TOA Paint Group, Cotto, COTTO Tile dominate Thai market; Viglacera leads Vietnam. Philippines: Mariwasa Siam Ceramics, Eurotiles. Across the region, the price gap between domestic and imported tile is wide — a domestic 60×60 cm porcelain might run S$15/m² in Singapore vs S$45/m² for Italian equivalent. For most utility tiling (bathroom floors, kitchen backsplashes), domestic mid-tier tile is fully fit for purpose. Reserve imported premium tile for featured surfaces. Standard dye-lot warning applies everywhere — buy all at once.

Dye lots can drift visibly across manufacturing batches. Always buy all tiles for one project from the same lot number — visible on the box label as "Lot: XXX" or "Calibre: X".

  • Tile is the most unforgiving material to under-order. Cut waste, broken tiles during install, future repair stock for chips / cracks, and dye-lot risk all eat into your order. Worse — once a specific tile SKU + dye lot sells out at the retailer, you cannot get more. Stories of bathrooms sitting 95% tiled for months while owners hunt for matching tile are common. Order at LEAST 10% extra for straight patterns, 15% for diagonal, 20% for herringbone / mosaic. The unused tile is cheap insurance + future repair stock.

  • Every tile production run uses a specific batch of glaze, pigment, and clay — together called a "dye lot" or "batch" or "calibre" depending on the brand. Tiles from different lots can vary visibly in color (subtle for porcelain, dramatic for natural stone). Mixing lots in one installation produces visible banding or patches. Every tile box has a lot number on the label — check it at purchase. Buy all your tile in ONE order to guarantee one lot, and confirm at checkout that all your boxes share the same lot number.

  • Porcelain is fired at higher temperatures (1200°C+) than ceramic (1000–1100°C), resulting in denser material with very low water absorption (<0.5% vs 3–5% for ceramic). This makes porcelain: usable outdoors (won't crack in freeze-thaw cycles), more durable underfoot, harder to cut (need a wet saw or premium dry blade), and slightly more expensive. Ceramic is fine for indoor walls and low-traffic floors; porcelain is the right choice for high-traffic floors, wet areas, and any outdoor application.

  • Standard recommendations: 1.5–3 mm for rectified porcelain (perfectly straight edges), 3–6 mm for ceramic (slight edge variation makes wider gaps necessary), 5–10 mm for natural stone (irregular edges need wider joints). The 3 mm (1/8 inch) default is the most common joint width for residential interior tiling. Wider joints use more grout (this tool's grout estimate scales accordingly) but hide minor tile-edge irregularities better. Always follow the tile manufacturer's recommended joint width — it's on the spec sheet.

  • It's an industry-standard approximation assuming 8 mm tile thickness and your specified gap width. For thicker tiles (12 mm+), bump the grout quantity by 25–40%. For tiles thinner than 8 mm (some thin-format wall tile), the estimate slightly over-counts. For natural stone with deep relief (slate, travertine), grout can absorb into the stone face during application — add another 10%. Cross-reference with the grout manufacturer's coverage table (Mapei, Laticrete, ARDEX, Davco all publish detailed tables per tile size + joint width).

  • The dividing line is joint width: 3 mm (1/8 inch) and wider → sanded grout (sand provides structural strength in wider joints, prevents crack). Narrower than 3 mm → unsanded grout (smoother, won't scratch polished tile surfaces, fits tight joints). For polished marble, glass tile, or any soft-surface tile, even at wider joints, use unsanded — sand particles can scratch the face during application. For most ceramic and porcelain at 3 mm joints, sanded is the right call. Epoxy grout is a premium option for stain-resistance in showers / countertops but is much harder to apply.

  • Break the room into rectangles. For an L-shape, two rectangles; for a T, three rectangles; for complex layouts, draw it on graph paper and decompose. Run the calculator once per rectangle, sum the tile counts. For each individual rectangle, the waste buffer applies — meaning a 2-rectangle L-shaped room will end up with slightly more total waste than a single-rectangle equivalent area. That's correct: more perimeter = more cuts = more waste. For very small rectangles (under 2 m² / 20 ft²), bump waste to 15% even on straight patterns, because single-tile rounding-up has bigger impact on small areas.

  • Same calculator works for walls — measure wall length × wall height in place of floor length × width. For shower walls, subtract the niche / shelf areas separately (run a quick second calc for those areas). For kitchen backsplashes, measure the linear length of countertop × the height up to upper cabinets (typically 18 inches / 46 cm). Backsplashes commonly use smaller mosaic tiles (1×1 to 4×12 inch), which require 15–20% waste due to higher cut frequency. The pattern dropdown handles this; pick "complex" for any mosaic.
