Estimating Drywall the Right Way
It Starts With Square Footage
Drywall estimating is fundamentally an area problem. You add up the surface you need to cover — the four walls, computed as twice the room's perimeter multiplied by the ceiling height, plus the ceiling itself if you're hanging it — then subtract the large openings like doors and picture windows that won't be covered. Divide that net area by the area of one sheet and round up, and you have your minimum sheet count. The arithmetic is exact; where estimates go wrong is forgetting the ceiling, ignoring waste, or not accounting for sheet orientation. A 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 square feet, a 4 × 10 covers 40, and a 4 × 12 covers 48. Bigger sheets mean fewer seams to tape and finish — a real time-saver on long walls — but they're heavy and hard to manoeuvre in tight spaces or up stairs, which is why most DIYers stick with 4 × 8s and pros with a lift often choose 4 × 12s.
Waste is the variable people underestimate. Every cut around a window, outlet, or corner produces an offcut, and not all offcuts are reusable, so a 10–15% allowance is standard — more for a room full of openings and angles, less for a simple rectangular box. The companion materials scale with area too: as a rule of thumb you'll use roughly a gallon of joint compound for every 100–150 square feet across the taping and three coats of finishing, about one screw per square foot (placed every 12–16 inches along studs), and joint tape running along every seam and inside corner. These figures are approximate by nature — how much compound you use depends heavily on your finishing skill and the level of finish — so the calculator labels them as estimates and you should buy a margin. Hanging sheets horizontally (perpendicular to the studs) is the standard for walls because it puts the tapered seams at a comfortable height, uses fewer linear feet of butt joints, and adds rigidity; stagger the joints so seams don't line up. Keep cut edges in corners where they're easier to hide, and plan your layout to land sheet edges on studs.
