Pick breed size
Size is the single biggest non-age factor for dog longevity. Toy/small breeds (Chihuahua, Yorkie, Pomeranian) often live 14-18 years. Medium breeds (Beagle, Cocker Spaniel) 12-14 years. Large breeds (Labrador, German Shepherd) 10-12 years. Giant breeds (Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Newfoundland) 7-10 years. A 5-year-old Labrador has the biological equivalent of a 56.7-year-old human. A 10-year-old has the equivalent of 67.8.

Forget the "× 7" rule
The "1 dog year = 7 human years" myth has no biological basis. It came from comparing average lifespans (10 dog years vs 70 human years) and dividing — but ignores that dogs mature 15× faster in year 1 and ~9× in year 2, then slow down. Modern formulas based on epigenetics are far more accurate.
Dog years — the modern science of biological age
For 70 years the conventional wisdom was that one dog year equals seven human years. The math seemed reasonable: dogs lived around 10 years, humans around 70, so a multiplier of 7. The trouble is that the relationship isn\'t linear. Dogs reach sexual maturity at 6-12 months (human equivalent ~13-15). They\'re biologically adult by age 2. After that, aging slows down. A 2020 study by Trey Ideker\'s lab at UC San Diego (Wang et al., Cell Systems 11(2)) compared DNA methylation patterns in 105 Labrador Retrievers against the same epigenetic clock used in human aging research. The result was the formula now widely cited by veterinarians: human age equivalent = 16·ln(dog age) + 31. A 1-year-old dog corresponds to a 31-year-old human; a 4-year-old to ~53; a 12-year-old to ~71.
Why size matters so much
Larger dog breeds age faster after reaching maturity — a phenomenon unique among mammals (most species: bigger = longer-lived). A 50 kg Great Dane has a median lifespan of ~7 years; a 2 kg Chihuahua ~16 years. Theories include faster cell division rates, growth hormone IGF-1 levels, and accelerated free-radical damage in large bodies. The modifier in this calculator approximates the +3 years (large) and +7 years (giant) human-equivalent age penalty observed in lifespan data for those size classes — a 7-year-old Great Dane is biologically more like a 72-year-old human than the 65 the base formula would suggest.
