Name Strokes + 三才五格: Chinese Naming Tradition

Naming studies (姓名学) is an important branch of Chinese fortune-reading tradition. The core 三才五格 (3-Element 5-Grid) theory was developed by Japanese scholar Kumasaki Kenmou in the 1920s (based on earlier Chinese naming concepts), then spread widely in HK + Taiwan. It computes 5 numerical grids from a name\'s stroke counts and uses them to evaluate name auspice. This tool provides preliminary stroke analysis.

The 5 Grids

(1) Heaven Grid: surname strokes + 1 — ancestors, fortune source. (2) Person Grid: last char of surname + first char of given — self + middle-age fortune. (3) Earth Grid: given-name strokes (+1 for single-char given) — early years + offspring. (4) Outer Grid: Total − Person + 1 — social + external connections. (5) Total Grid: all strokes — later life.

Uses

(1) Newborn naming reference. (2) Company + brand naming. (3) Name-change adults checking stroke patterns. (4) Personal "numerology" exploration as cultural self-reflection.

10 Facts about Name Strokes

01

三才五格 naming theory was developed by Japanese scholar Kumasaki Kenmou in the 1920s, later spread in HK + Taiwan.

02

HK 2024 naming-services survey: ~35% of new-parent couples consult a 命理师 for stroke + 5-grid analysis.

03

Tradition holds the "Person Grid" as most important — directly tied to the person's character + middle-age fortune.

04

Naming numerology covers numbers 1-81, each with a quality assignment. E.g. 21 + 24 are very auspicious; 44 is very inauspicious.

05

SG/MY/ID Chinese name-change rate is ~5% (2020 data) — mostly adults who feel their original name "doesn't suit their fate".

06

Naming numerology is a cultural framework only — no scientific evidence links specific stroke counts to life outcomes.

07

Tool uses the mainstream Kumasaki system. Other schools (some HK/Taiwan practitioners) vary slightly. Defer to family tradition if in doubt.

08

Stroke counts must use Traditional forms — Simplified 龙 (5) vs Traditional 龍 (16) give entirely different results.

09

Company + brand naming also uses the "Total Grid" concept. Microsoft's Chinese name 微软 was cross-checked (7+11=18 = very auspicious).
